NYSAP Technical Assistance

NYSAP’s primary mission is to improve the quality of screening and assessment in juvenile justice facilities and programs nationwide.   To this end, we provide technical assistance and consultation to such facilities and programs on mental health and substance use screening and assessment, assessment of risk of re-offending, and assessment of youths’ placement and rehabilitation program needs.

The most common juvenile justice facilities and programs to which we consult are:

  • juvenile diversion programs
  • juvenile pretrial detention centers
  • juvenile probation offices
  • juvenile correctional and aftercare programs

Among the screening and assessment issues about which we consult are:

  • Analysis of screening and assessment needs
  • Selection of screening and assessment tools
  • Implementation issues: Developing policies and procedures for screening and assessment
  • Training for administration and use of screening and assessment tools
  • Assistance in constructing a program’s screening and assessment data bases

NYSAP also consults to state agencies and programs that oversee juvenile justice programs statewide.   For example, we assist state agencies regarding statewide adoption and implementation of screening and assessment in juvenile justice programs.   NYSAP also assists states seeking to develop or reform law, policies and practices regarding juveniles’ competence to stand trial.

NYSAP’s consultation is obtained in various ways:

  • Juvenile justice programs in states that are part of the MacArthur Foundation’s Models for Change Initiative may obtain our assistance through their state’s Models for Change director.  Consultation to Models for Change states is covered under NYSAP’s grant from the MacArthur Foundation.
  • Any state agency may contact NYSAP for assistance in managing adoption, implementation, and training regarding MAYSI-2 when the state anticipates implementation in one or more type of juvenile justice facilities statewide.   This consultation is covered under NYSAP’s relation with the MacArthur Foundation.
  • Individual juvenile justice facilities and programs nationwide may obtain routine consultation from NYSAP on adoption, implementation, and specific questions related to MAYSI-2.   On-site training of individual facilities and programs can be arranged by requesting to use NYSAP’s internet video training tools.
  • Any state legislative planners can obtain consultation in development of legislation regarding juveniles’ competence to stand trial.  This is covered by NYSAP’s grant with the MacArthur Foundation.
